My Face Final

Website Research

This is the website for 'Jake Bugg', an indie rock solo artist born in Nottingham. At the top of the website it has headings with links to his videos, gigs, photos, tour dates and contacts. Also at the top  there is links to his twitter page, facebook page and then his you tube channel.

This is the website for Ben Howard, a solo artist. On his website he has a picture of himself and links to his newest album and single. He has no links to anywhere else on the website, just his homepage has the dates of his upcoming gigs. He only has one social media link and this is for twitter. At the bottom of his web page he has video of his new single.

This is the website of Ed Sheeran. On his website you can see the background a lime green and has black elements to it. The big X you see is actually the cover for his latest album he released. On this website he has links to his twitter and I tunes page. There is a link at the top where you can continue into the website which gives you more information on tour dates, latest videos and what he is actually doing.

Digi Pack

We got inspiration for our artist James Couleur from Bastille as they are an indie rock band which is the same as our artist.

Some other similar artists are The Killers. The Killers are a very famous and popular, well known Indie Rock band; who have been amazingly successful over the years. Due to this success there comes different albums made and therefore lots of digipacts have been created. Here are some of their digipacks.

We have planned in our music video to use lots of colour and powder paint. Along with this and our music genre that we are aiming for being Indie Rock Coldplay matched this perfectly down to a tee. The reason for this being that their music matches our artist James Couleur. Also their album Mylo Xyloto was filled and jam packed with vibrant colours. Here is the example of their Mylo Xyloto album cover and digi pack.

As you can see the title of the album is right in the middle of the Digipack. The title takes up around third of the front cover, and the rest is filled in with colour. This is in complete contrast to the other digi packs that Coldplay usually produce. A unique twist to this album is in the graffiti words you can see in the background of the album cover. Some of the graffiti if you look closely links into the lyrics or songs on the album. An example of this is in the top right hand corner of the album. If you look closely you can see the words 'Everytear Waterfall' this links into the song on the album "Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall'.

This is the back of Coldplay's Digi pack from the album Mylo Xyloto. As you can see the back of the Digi pack is full of colour and graffiti continuing to link with our theme for our album. The inspiration for our colour bonanza in our music video is backed up with the montage of colour you see here.

Here you can the CD for Coldplay's album Mylo Xyloto. Yet again the colorful print gives us great inspiration for our video.

Lip Syncing Task

Here is our lip syncing task for the group. We decided to sing the first 30 seconds of the song and then we would choose who we thought was the best. We came to the conclusion that James Clifford would be the best person to take up the role. He is the third person to perform in the video above. We thought this because he seemed very confident in front of a camera and put a lot of effort into making sure he lip synced in time.

Paul Hunter

Paul Hunter is a music video director in the USA. He is known for directing many popular music videos and has directed over 100 different ones. He also directs some television adverts and was nominated for an Emmy for Nike's freestyle advert.

Paul has worked with many famous artists with the likes of Michael Jackson, Eminem, Jenifer Lopez, The Pussycat Dolls and Britney Spears.
In 2000, Paul Hunter worked with Eminem on his video, The Way I Am.

The video is a mixture of performance and narrative and represents how a farther cares strongly for his daughter. The video shows shots of Eminem standing at the top of a building about to jump off and also shots of his daughter and how he cares for her. It teaches the audience not to be selfish and think about others because when he jumps off of the building he gets lots of flashbacks of his daughter and regrets jumping off of the building.

Paul has also worked with Michael Jackson. He directed his come-back single You Rock My World.

You Rock My World was released in August in 2001 and then released again as part if the Invincible album by Micheal Jackson.

In 2005, he then worked with the Pussycat Dolls on their music video Don't Cha. This is one of their best know tracks.

At the moment, Paul Hunter is working with PRETTYBIRD a production company in California.

Image Ideas

In our video we plan to have a transition phase where our main artist goes from being in a dark place in his life; to a happy, fun, exciting new part of his life.
We plan to show this with two different visuals in our music video. Firstly we will have our main artist in a dark place in his life, therefore our costume choice for him is key. The other visual is the use of powder paint.
As our artist is an Indie Rock artist they have a very unique look and one in which we need to get right in our music video in order for our video to look the best it can be.

Here are some costume ideas and images we can get inspiration from...
Here you can see one of the images that we can get inspiration from. Taking away the sunglasses, I feel that this image would be great as it fits in with the dark and dull shots for our video, with the hat hiding his full identity when in the dark and dull shots of our video. Then when the hat comes off this resembles a sense of release and freedom when you get the bright and colourful paint shots.

This is a slightly different image to the first one you see, however I would class this as being stereotypically a very indie look. If you look closely you can see the under the denim jacket the model is also wearing a hoodie with the hood up. Yet again this could be a perfect image when filming the dark and dull shots of the video.

Here you can see a completely different image to the first two you have seen. This image can be used in the paint shots. Here you see more of the artist as he is wearing a vest, his identity isn't as covered up. This could therefore go on to give off the impression that he is happy with his life now, using the colours from the paint to back this off. As well as that it also gives off the impression that its summer time, resulting in a colourful shot.

Inspirations for My Face

I had a few inspirations for the music video for My Face. Our first idea that we came up with was to throw a paint party. We saw a video on YouTube that had inspired us to replicate this and we thought it would fit well with the song and the narrative to our song.

We then looked around on YouTube looking at songs that are of a similar genre and artist. We had a look at some of Bastille's other songs such as Pompeii and Things We Lost In The Fire.

We decided that we would have an indie artist. We thought we should have our music video in a deserted place. This would then fit the look of our indie band artist. We liked the idea of the close ups on Bastille's face looking sad as we thought this would fit well with the genre and the storyline of our music video.

Track Pitch

This is the PowerPoint that we demonstarted to the class about our three films that we have chosen. They are Bastille - These Streets, Imagine Dragons - Bleeding Out and Ed Sheeran I'm A Mess.

Production Diary

Lesson 1: Today we found out our groups for our Music Video Task. We then started looking for music / songs that didn't have a music video to them already.

Lesson 2: today we started pulling together our ideas for our music videos. We have chosen our three songs with out a music video and Ben s is putting them into a power point to present to our class so that we can get feedback.

Lesson 3: Today we presented our three songs to our class and gained some feedback about each of our ideas. out of our three song ideas they preferred our third idea, saying how the second idea would be too complicated to do / too similar to previous ideas. They also made the comment on how the ideas for Bastille would have to be done first time as once there is mess there is no going back.

Lesson 4: Today we worked on our feedback and chose our final song, These Streets by Bastille we then started pulling in ideas and worked on a timeline.

Lesson 5: We drew inspiration for a powdered paint festival, inspired by the festival of love in India and also various videos online.

Lesson 6:  We added more to the story board today, we are having a constant flow of ideas so we decided just to draw them down and then cut out each scene and stitch them together.

Lesson 7: Today we had our song on constant repeat in class as we allocated shots to different parts of the song, we now have a storyboard that we have completed and allocated timings to each shot that we will try to stick to.

 Lesson 8: Planning prepar
ation for the powder festival including sourcing paint, mobile power options, reserving cameras and other recording equipment to make sure that we are prepared.

Lesson 9: Mass advertising around school fro our Paint party, we also spoke to groundsman who gave us the keys to the back fields where we are going to have the filming session.

Lesson 10: The Final countdown, Cameras were checked, the ground covering was also checked, its really sunny today should be a good shoot! absences recorded to collect Generator. We also split down the 20 Kg of powdered paint into handy bags so that it is easy to distribute and throw. We also sourced a MASSIVE speaker from music as well as an air blower for mass paint throwing.
- The Paint party went really well, we now have about 20 students caked in powered paint, we have about 10 cameras and a go pro's worth of footage to sift though....

Lesson 11: With all the footage collected and stored safely onto the media computers, we have started sifting through the hours of footage and trimming different shots into an order that fits well and flows nicely.

Lesson 12: We continued to edit the collected footage from the paint party today. We also started planning when and where we need to be to film the rest of our shot list.

Lesson 13: With the editing of the paint party footage now on hold we sat together today to work out each other schedules and when we were free to films. We split the shots into 3 sections, Maldon Shots (anything rural or sea based) Chelmsford Shots (Graffiti, Time lapses, Paint Party) And Heavy Equipment Shots (The Paint Throw).

Lesson 14: We finalized plans for the rest of our shooting schedule with a major filming day the following Wednesday ( Maldon) as well as various test filming days in Chelmsford. We also planned what we were going to do about the Digipak and the Website constructions.

Lesson 15:  Our plans for next Wednesday were confirmed and finalized. We also completed some plans for various photography shoots that we will use in the construction of the website and also the digipak. We started creating the website.

Lesson 16: Today we completed one of the first photo shoots. This contained lots of photos in various locations these photos will all be used in the gallery section of the website and also to be used in the creation of the Social media pages. Some of these photos are likely to be used in the tour poster and possibly in the Digipak.

Lesson 17:  Today we went over to our test filming location for the graffiti wall section. Here we took footage of James walking across different sections of the wall in different costumes. When reviewing the footage we will decide what looks good and what costume we are going to get him to wear though out the rest of the music video.

Lesson 18: Today we looked over the footage from yesterday. we have finalized his outfit, a denim jacket with claret coloured t-shirt. We also split into two technical teams one to work on the digipak and the other to work on the website.

Lesson 19: Today we further developed our website and Digipak. towards the end we started pulling together ideas for the Tour poster.

Lesson 20: Maldon Filming day today! A 40 minute journey each way to get to our filming location. The sun is shining and the tide is rising, time to shoot some great shots!

Lesson 21: We pulled all of our footage off of the cameras today from the Maldon shoot. This filming session forms the bulk of our video. We are all pleased with how it looks, We have another filming day in Chelmsford tomorrow in which we aim to get the final shots we need for our music video.

Lesson 22: Today we took the final shots fro the music video. We have collated them all on to the media computers and will start on the final stages on editing tomorrow.

Lesson 23: today was spend editing our first draft for the video. We have screenings on Friday at which we are going to receive feedback on how we can improve them to turn our first draft into our final draft.

Lesson 24:  Editing completed today for the first draft of our music video whilst we rendered the final video and uploaded it to you tube we finalized the tour poster and also the digipak.

Lesson 25: Today we watched everyone else's first drafts and gave feedback on them. We then received the feedback for our own videos. This has identified areas that we need to work on and improve. We have set another date for re-filming some of the Chelmsford shoots, we have also purchased all of the extra equipment we need for the 'Paint Throwing scene'.

Lesson 26: Today we received feedback on  our digipak and website. From this feedback we have lots of changes to make. After the session today we went to film the Paint Throwing Scene. James has volunteered to film the timeplase section we need for the choruses.

Lesson 27: We adjusted the digipak and tour poster in accordance with the feedback that we received from it. the final draft of the digipak is now complete and we have received positive feedback upon it.

Lesson 28: all of the footage is not together. We spent today editing all of the lasts bits of footage that we needed to produce our final draft.

Lesson 29: The editing finished today for the Music video and the YouTube upload began. We Are also making a few final tweeks to the digipak and some more major changes to the website.

Lesson 30: The digipak was completed today. We spent a lot of time on the website today, rearranging pages and changing the colour schemes. We also replaced the background image with one that we created today as well. The layout of each page was also changed so that it flows much better now and there is a concurrent theme across it all.

My Track Pitch Feedback

I chose three different songs to present to my group. I chose:
These Streets - Bastille
Bleeding Out - Imagine Dragons
Which Doctor - Tinie Tempah

These Streets
My group really liked the song. It gave us a lot of ideas when we first listened to it. The group expanded on some of my ideas that I already had we decided that we should put this in our top three tracks to present to the class.

Bleeding Out
This song was also liked by the group. The slow lyrics a fast paced beat gave us a lot to work with and also gave us a lot of creative ideas such as reversed shots and also the beat of a drum was very dominating in the song so we could also use that.

Which Doctor
The rest of my group strongly disagreed with this song. They thought that it would be too hard to think of good ideas for and also the quick paced rap would be hard to replicate for someone who would be lip syncing the song. The voice of Tinie would also sound out of place on one of us singing along so this track did not make the final three.

Andrew Goodwin Research

Today we had to research about Andrew Goodwin. He came up with the theory that all music videos will have three different ways of presenting themselves. These were narrative, performance and concept.

Narrative:
Narrative is when the music video tells a story. There is not normally any shots of the band singing or playing instruments. An example of this would be David Guetta's Titanium.

Performance:
Performance is where the music video is always focused on the band or artist. It shows them singing to the camera and nothing else. An example of this would be One Directions What Makes You Beautiful.

Concept:
A concept video is where there is little performance but also there is no narrative to the music video. An example video of this type of music video would be Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer.

What do record labels look for in new artists

Talent - It is important to be individual when you want to be a new artist. Record companies want someone who is individual and unique. People want to see someone who is unique and interesting and this should make them sell albums and sell out arenas.

Product - The better products an artist has the better the music that they will produce. If you look at DJ's, for example Disclosure, they have all of the latest technology. This allows them to make top quality music and produce something that is going to sell well.

Placement - There are many different ways in which people consume music. Some people buy their music from sites like iTunes and some people pay for a subscription service such as Spotify or stream on YouTube.

Promotion - There are millions of ways in which artists can promote their music. The way that is becoming the easiest and most popular is through social media such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. This is easy because firstly it is free and secondly because most people around the world have some sort of social media account.

Transition - The transition stage is when a semi popular artist becomes a massive hit. This is normally achieved with one great song which reaches number one. For example Megan Trainor with All About That Bass.
